Redlining is continues to exist in the United States as a complex byproduct of the New Deal era of discriminatory housing practices designed to prevent desirable areas from becoming populated by Black residents. The effects of decades-long gentrification and redlining are still felt to this day and continue to alter the tenuous landscape of American housing. Recent research conducted at Washington University in St. Louis reveals additional insight into the magnitude and breadth of redlining practices, and their unequivocal association to drastic health disparities among vulnerable populations, including co-morbidities tied to worse environmental health.
The EndingCOVID team vehemently condemns and denounces the actions that directly contributed to the tragic death of Tyre Nichols. While stark disparities exist with regard to racial injustice in our country, police brutality cannot be simply distilled to an issue of race. Police brutality is a pressing issue that has led to life-changing injuries and life-ending consequences for countless lives, with those who identify with marginalized groups and systemically discriminated populations being the most impacted. In the fight against racism, we must acknowledge the intersection at which police brutality exists and take an active role in redirecting political divisiveness to actionable change.
Rest in power, Tyre Nichols.
